Bon Appetit

March 30, 2010

Last week I watched “Julie & Julia“, which if you haven’t seen, you should watch.  I loved it.  I have to admit that I didn’t know much about Julia Child before watching it but I was inspired to get her cookbook – “Mastering the Art of French Cooking.”  I don’t think I’ll cook my way thru the entire book like Julie Powell did however it inspired me in one other way:

I want my blogs to be more interesting.  My blogs were boring me!  I’m thankful to all of you who were actually reading them but I realized they were drrryyyy.  And I think we can all agree that dry is seldom a good thing!  (Augusten Burroughs being the obvious exception! Oh, and martinis – if that’s your thing.  And the wonderful acronym – Don’t Repeat Yourself.  Ok, ok, so there are SOME good dry things!)

So from now on look forward to more pizzazz or more fireworks or more fizz or more oomph, more spirit and spunk or at least more laughs.  It’s the least I can do.

Although I’m pretty sure I still won’t use the “F” word.

Ice Cream!

March 25, 2010

About 10 years ago someone gave me an ice cream maker (thanks, Lori!) and I used it a few times and then I put it away in the cupboard for 8 YEARS!!  WHAT WAS I THINKING?  Last week I finally came to my senses last week and pulled it out of the cupboard, dusted it off (ewww…dead spiders!) and immediately made some home made vanilla ice cream – my son’s favorite.  We were so excited to eat it that I forgot to take photos.

Yesterday I had requests for espresso ice cream and vanilla ice milk.  Since the espresso ice cream sounded better to me I started with that.  The ingredients are simple – milk, half and half, whipping cream, sugar, vanilla and a pinch of salt – OH!  And two shots of VERY strong freshly brewed espresso.  (Can you tell how fast I’m typing?)

Under normal circumstances the noise that the ice cream maker makes would drive me a little batty but knowing what the reward is at the end of all the whirring and grinding makes it a sweet sound.  When it was done, I stirred slivered almonds and dark fudge sauce thru it and if I do say so myself it was freakin’ delicious!  We were so excited I forgot to take photos AGAIN!!  This time I was smart enough to make a double batch though so there is actually some left over for cone photos.

While we waited for it to freeze my son and I typed vanilla ice cream into this website and it beat out Godzilla, chocolate pudding and merman!

The Model Skeleton

March 22, 2010

I like to decorate in ways that are fun and unique.  In our home we have a skeleton from Ixtapa, Mexico.  His name is Hairhehhe.  We never really say it or spell it the same way twice – just roll the ‘r’ if you can.

We decorate Herrhay to correspond with whatever holiday or event is coming up next in our household.  Right now he’s still decorated for St. Patrick’s Day but he has quite an extensive wardrobe  as he has been adorning our mantle for about 5 years now.

He has a Santa hat, heart covered boxer shorts and a hoodie.  He’s been dressed as Father Time.  He has a gondolier’s hat.  He’s worn a cowboy hat and had a cigarette dangling out of his mouth.  He’s carried a bridal bouquet, birthday balloons and various flags.  He’s been posed in dozens of different postures in his little chair over the years.

Hehrehey is fun!
